Position: Purchasing and Packaging Assistant
Location: Carrollton, TX


The Packaging Development Specialist works under the guidance of the Purchasing Director, collaborating closely with Marketing, Purchasing and Quality departments.  The packaging development specialist is the key project driver on packaging related projects, working closely with suppliers and the internal team to ensure a smooth flow of functional, quality component packaging for retail, sample and set products.

• Complete purchase orders that are generated by Purchasing for packaging components.  Review purchase orders to ensure that all information is accurate and orders are optimized to take advantage of price breaks and economies across multiple production projects.

• Actively manage purchasing notes related to all orders, update pricing, ship to location, delivery date and contact info for shipment arrangement.

• Send completed purchase orders and purchasing terms and agreement to packaging suppliers and confirm receipt. Actively follow-up with packaging suppliers to ensure that orders are progressing smoothly to meet requested due dates. 

• Work collaboratively with product development to generate new packaging ideas and options in response to marketing/product development briefs.  

• Coordinate optimization of desired packaging options from marketing/creative with achievable cost targets.

• Cultivate and Vet appropriate suppliers for new primary and secondary packaging options, and where appropriate, merchandising and point of purchase pieces.

• Manage quoting process

• Work with purchasing to identify and vet suppliers, when needed, for changes in existing packaging sourcing.  

• Lead RFP process and decisions on new packaging suppliers. (ex: tube supplier change)

• Lead required steps for pre-sourcing packaging qualification

• Manage requests and iterations on sample and comp submissions

• Check packaging options for suitability under various use conditions - ie: dosage, squeezability, evacuation, etc. Confirm fit, form and function of product components.Establish tolerances with supplier.

• Conduct ship testing, fill testing (for weight claims), and torture testing before final approval

• Manage approval process for final samples/comps with internal team

• Coordinate and manage color matching process, if applicable.  Establish and manage color range boards between creative and suppliers.

• Coordinate approvals on final costing for packaging as part of total product COG

• Secure final drawings and components specifications; ensure specs/drawing for all components (tubes, bottles, pumps, labels, etc) are approved internally and provided to purchasing for reference on PO.

• Provide all die lines, CADs for the creative team to start visuals 

• Responsible for keeping retain library of all printed cartons, labels and primaries as well as PP and PPS

• Coordinate with vendor/creative if there are any printing, color, artwork issues

• Ensure drawings and specs are submitted to quality for inclusion in the PIF folder.

• Initiate packaging compatibility testing with suppliers

• Coordinate sizing of master shipper and work with purchasing to designate optimal case pack out.  

• On-going evaluation of current packaging to help create quality and cost improvement recommendations for existing packaging for improved delivery & cost reductions.

• Initiate projects where minor changes or tweaks are required to current packaging (ie: Grand Tour carton resizing).

• Spearhead all kitting with third parties, including current Canadian and domestic projects.

• Act as main liaison with EPC packaging and procurement team for all packaging related opportunities.

• Responsible for sourcing and specifying all bags/boxes/promotional items including t-shirts, etc.




• 3-4 years' experience with purchasing and development of consumer related packaging

• Works effectively across the organization, fosters teamwork, and takes initiative.

• Ability to organize and carry out multiple projects with often tight deadlines.

• Creativity and flexibility to work in an entrepreneurial environment; excellent problem-solving skills

• Proven understanding of consumer package development, materials and package testing protocol. 

• Working knowledge of the consumer goods supply chain and experience dealing with domestic and international packaging suppliers.

• Strong passion for packaging and a proactive drive to achieve cost-focused, high quality solutions

• Technical understanding and experience with a broad range of packaging components
