Group Director, Operations and Supply Chain Management

 

Reports To: General Manager, Jack Black
Location: Carrollton, TX

 

Position Summary:

 

The Director of Supply Chain Management will lead and manage all activities related to total supply chain operations, including supply and demand planning, procurement, inventory control, quality control, warehousing, and business systems/logistics. The position will have five direct reports, and will report to the General Manager.

 

Accountabilities:

 

  • Lead team in designing and implementing supply chain best practices to support changing market conditions, new business opportunities, and cost reduction strategies.
  • Design and implement new or improved supply chain processes that support company growth and financial goals. Develop strategic plans to improve productivity, quality and efficiency of operations.
  • Review, monitor and update supply chain practices in accordance with new or changing environmental policies, standards, regulations, or laws.
  • Define performance metrics for measurement, comparison, and evaluation of supply chain factors, such as product cost, quality, forecast accuracy, warehouse and transportation efficiency. Reports metrics on a regular basis to senior management.
  • Facilitate analysis and management of inventories to increase inventory turns, reduce waste, or optimize customer service.
  • Document and communicate supply chain processes, such as workflows, cycle times, position responsibilities, or system flows to help facilitate team and total company understanding of processes. Lead implementation of supply chains that support sustainability efforts.
  • Provide strong leadership and guidance to quality team to assess production and supply issues, and ensure problems are investigated according to a clearly defined process, and resolved in a timely and cost-efficient manner.
  • Participate in new product launch process to ensure orderly and timely material and production flow to meet promised retailer delivery dates and achieve sales targets.
  • Provide leadership and strategic guidance to team in ensuring best practices for business systems and logistics. Oversee evolving systems and ensure seamless integration of new software to support business mission.
  • Develop processes for better coordination of supply chain management with other functional areas, such as sales, marketing, finance, production, or quality assurance.
  •  

    Warehouse and Logistics
  • Lead team in design and implementation of warehousing strategies that optimize available space and pick/pack process. Manage and assess space planning needs on an on-going basis to ensure maximum efficiency. Proactively direct changes and improvements where required.
  • Guide team in selecting transportation carriers, modes, and routes to maximize economy by combining shipments or consolidating warehousing and distribution.
  • Assess appropriate material handling equipment needs and staffing levels to efficiently and cost effectively load, unload, move, or store materials.
  • Design, implement, or oversee product take back or reverse logistics programs to ensure products are recycled, reused, or responsibly disposed.
  • Evaluate, and as appropriate select, technology solutions to improve tracking and reporting of materials, efficiency of product distribution, storage and inventory management.
  • Lead team in identifying opportunities to reuse or recycle materials to minimize consumption of new materials, minimize waste, or to convert wastes to by-products. As appropriate, investigate or review sustainability performance records of current or potential storage and distribution service providers to ensure best practices for minimizing environmental impact. Locate or select biodegradable, non-toxic, or other environmentally friendly materials for packing processes.

    Procurement
  • Lead negotiation of prices and terms with suppliers, vendors, or freight forwarders.
  • Provide guidance for team to develop material costs forecasts and standard cost lists. Ensure regular oversight and management of product cost of goods.
  • Appraise vendor manufacturing ability through on-site visits and industry standard/best practice measurements.
  • Monitor supplier performance and assess ability to meet quality standards and delivery requirements.
  • Regularly analyze information about supplier performance or procurement program success.
  • Actively cultivate new potential suppliers. Develop or implement procedures and systems to evaluate and select suppliers. Meet with suppliers to discuss performance metrics, to provide performance feedback.

    Demand and Supply Planning
  • Oversee the forecasting process and provide thought leadership to team in assessing past sales and demand data that supports forecast for product and component needs and review appropriate production levels and timing.
  • Monitor and track inventory metrics to optimize FIFO, inventory turns, forecast accuracy.
  • Provide leadership to purchasing and forecasting to create supply plans that ensure consistent availability of materials and products for consistent supply and minimization of back orders.

    Quality
  • Oversee all activities relative to Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Quality Engineering, and Quality Systems. Ensure continued compliance to all applicable regulations, maintain all operations in full inspection-ready fashion, foster a mindset of continuous quality improvement, and optimize quality systems.
  • Ensure appropriate quality systems and evidence of control are in place at all suppliers and the appropriate monitoring is in place.

    Required Education, Skills and Experience

     

  • BS or advanced degree in supply chain management or related operations/logistics field.
  • 10 years' experience in a supply chain role. Ideally with consumer or personal care products.
  • Extensive experience leading multi-functional work groups, and demonstrated success in leading, planning and accomplishing goals.
  • Highly skilled at leading and directing the work of others, but fully capable of accomplishing tasks independently when needed.
  • Must have a strong knowledge of Microsoft Office products, especially Excel.
  • Must have strong experience with MRP systems; experience with Microsoft Navision a plus.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills.
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to multitask, manage time and respond to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
  • Strong team player with the drive to help assure high quality standards.
  • Must have excellent problem-solving skills.
