HOW TO TRANSITION FROM SUMMER TO FALL SKINCARE

September 4, 2023 by Jack

Unfortunately, those not-so-endless days of summer have come to a close, and along with forgoing shortened Friday workdays and weekends at the beach, there’s another transition you’ll have to adapt to: switching up your product routine so you’re using skincare for fall.

The changing of the seasons has an impact on your skin’s health. As the temps start to dip, it becomes zapped of essential moisture and can become irritated by indoor heat, outdoor cold, wind, and humidity. These fluctuations can alter the skin’s pH, which causes its barrier to become compromised, leading to tight, dry, itchy, flaky skin. That said, it’s vital that you adjust your skincare routine as summer transitions into fall so you can maintain a healthy and radiant complexion throughout the seasonal shift.

Don’t worry — it only takes a few tweaks to your current routine, so let’s get into it!

Assess Your Summer Skin

Before transitioning into a fall skincare routine, you must address any residual effects of summer-related conditions like excessive sun exposure, heat, and humidity. We’re talking about sunburn, increased oiliness, and dehydration.

  • Jack Black CBD+HA Serum is perfect for giving dehydrated skin a moisture boost. The antioxidant-rich formula contains our exclusive blend of Hyaluronic Acid, CBD, and plant oils to revive dull, dry skin. It can be used on its own or mixed with any of our moisturizers.
  • Our Dry Erase Ultra-Calming Face Cream helps diminish the appearance of redness and clinically tested ingredients make it ideal for use after exposure to environmental elements, like the sun.

  • Get oily, dehydrated skin under control with Jack Black Clean Break Oil-Free Moisturizer. It provides a lightweight burst of moisture, leaving behind a natural, shine-free finish. Niacinamide helps improve skin texture and tone, while Organic White Tea and Sea Kelp deliver antioxidant protection from free radicals such as sun exposure and environmental pollutants.

Understand Your Fall Skin Needs

While your skin may be oily in the summer, in the fall, you may detect that it looks and feels drier. It’s essential to assess your skin to transition your routine accordingly correctly.

There are a few key reasons your skin feels drier with the changing seasons. For starters, as temperatures drop, so does the humidity. Hot showers and indoor heaters are great for warming up on a chilly night, but studies have found that they pull the water and lipids out of your skin, leading to compromised skin barrier protein. The result is dry, itchy, cracked skin and increased transepidermal water loss. TEWL measures the amount of water that escapes from the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the epidermis or top layer) per skin area.

Fall Skincare Tips

Switch Up Your Cleanser

You may gravitate towards a more potent cleanser during the summer due to excess sweat and increased outdoor activities. In the fall, switch to a men's facial cleanser that won’t strip the skin of any of its natural oils, which are vital when the temps dip.

  • Jack Black Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser removes dirt and excess oils without overdrying, leaving your skin fresh and hydrated. Organic Aloe and Sage Leaf Extracts and Chamomile helps soothe, calm, and soften the skin. Oat and Coconut are natural sulfate surfactants that dissolve pore-clogging impurities without making the skin feel tight and dry.

Exfoliate Regularly

Between excess sweat, oil, dead skin, and sunscreen use, you may find that your skin is a bit more congested at the end of the summer. An exfoliating scrub for the face helps unclog pores, improves skin texture, and reveals a fresher, more revitalized complexion. It also helps your other skincare products work more efficiently. Just wait until you’ve healed from a sunburn before incorporating an exfoliant into your fall routine.

  • Jack Black Face Buff Energizing Scrub is formulated with mineral-rich Bamboo Powder to provide a gentle yet effective exfoliation to help unclog pores, minimize shaving irritation, and prevent ingrown hairs. Peppermint invigorates while Licorice Extract and Allantoin soothe and calm the skin. It’s the number one men’s facial exfoliator!* Rubbing gently in circles, work a nickel-sized amount onto a wet face two to four times a week.

Add a Hydrating Serum

If you’re not already using a serum, fall is the perfect time to add one to your routine. Serums are more concentrated than moisturizers and can penetrate the skin deeper. For this reason, you’ll find a variety of formulas to target specific skin concerns such as acne, dark spots, dullness, and aging skin.

In the fall, reach for our Brightening Booster Vitamin C Serum, a hydrating, multitasking formula chock-full of antioxidants like 10% THD Ascorbate. It’s a part of our ProSeries Age Control Collection, created for those who are really looking to reduce the visible signs of aging skin. In a Consumer Perception Study, after four weeks of use,* a significant number of participants noticed brighter, more revitalized skin that looked firmer and with fewer lines and wrinkles. Skin also felt more hydrated.

Change Your Moisturizer

A face moisturizer is a staple of any skincare routine year-round. Still, the fall is an excellent time to incorporate a formula with active ingredients that you may want to avoid during the summer because they make your skin more sensitive to the sun. You may also need something that adds more moisture and nourishes your skin.

  • Jack Black Nighttime BAK-up Retinol Alternative is formulated with bakuchiol, a botanical shown to provide anti-aging benefits comparable to retinol but without the potential irritation, and cannabis sativa seed oil to prevent moisture loss and soothe the skin. It’s been clinically shown to significantly improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and enhance the overall appearance of the skin. Keep in mind that oily and combination skin types may be able to use it alone, but dry and normal skin types would benefit from adding Dry Erase.
  • Between whipping winds and dipping temperatures, your skin can become a bit irritated when the seasons change. Our Dry Erase® Ultra-Calming Face Cream delivers superior moisture and comfort to thirsty skin. Hydromanil™ (10%) provides immediate, long-lasting hydration*, while SymRelief®, a blend of Bisabolol and Ginger Root Extract, diminishes the appearance of redness and soothes the skin.*

*10% Hydromanil™ aqueous gel formulation vs. placebo 2X daily. Hydromanil™ is used under authorization of Provital. SymRelief® is used under authorization of Symrise. Based on supplier data.

Keep Using Sun Protection

Just because you’re no longer having fun in the sun doesn’t mean you should tuck your SPF away in your beach bag until next summer. Even though your skin is more vulnerable during the warm weather months, it’s imperative to use a sunscreen moisturizer in the fall and winter because harmful UV rays are present year-round. While it may be too early to start dreaming of a white Christmas, remember that snow reflects more UV radiation than water, so you’re still at risk for sunburn and skin damage — even on cold, cloudy days.

  • Jack Black Dual Defense Face Moisturizer 100% Mineral Sunscreen is an oil-free daily moisturizer that provides an SPF of 30 to protect your skin from UVA and UVB exposure
and the visible signs of aging, including dryness, irregular pigmentation, wrinkling, and roughness.
Hyaluronic acid delivers superior hydration, which your skin needs during a seasonal change.
There are no chemical filters, and it’s suitable for all skin types, including blemish-prone skin.

  • Don’t forget to protect your lips! Our Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 contains nourishing skin conditioners and antioxidants to prevent, soothe, and relieve dry, chapped, irritated lips.
It penetrates quickly to provide immediate relief. SPF 25 offers superior sun protection while safeguarding
against extreme temperatures and wind. It’s the number one men’s lip treatment* and best-selling lip treatment with SPF**.

Institute Self-Care and Wellness

Skincare products aren’t the only way to transition your routine from summer to fall. Self-care and wellness should also be top of mind. Healthy lifestyle choices directly affect skin health.

  • Sleep: Get ample sleep each night — the Mayo Clinic recommends seven or more hours a night. It’s also essential to establish a healthy sleeping pattern by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day. Remember, your skin repairs itself while you’re sleeping, so adopting a solid nighttime skincare routine is vital.
  • Diet: What you put into your body is reflected in the appearance of your skin! Eat a healthy, balanced diet of lean proteins, healthy fats, whole grains, and plenty of fruit and veggies. Some of the best foods for skin health include fatty fish, avocados, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, walnuts, eggs, broccoli, natural yogurt, and berries. Don’t forget to wash it all down with plenty of water! The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is approximately 15.5 cups daily for men and 11.5 cups for women.
  • Stress Management: According to the American Academy of Dermatology, stress causes inflammation, slowing wound healing, and negatively affecting various skin conditions. Also, since your sebaceous glands produce more oil when you’re frazzled, acne can worsen for those prone to breaking out. Find time each day to check in with yourself and reduce stress. Download a specialized app, establish an exercise routine, experiment with breathing techniques, meditate, practice yoga, talk out your feelings with someone, and again, eat a healthy diet!

When transitioning to a fall skincare routine, first address any summer-related skin conditions such as sunburn, increased oiliness, and dehydration. While your skin may be oily in the summer, it may start to look and feel drier due to a drop in temperature and humidity.

Tweak your regime with our list of go-to product tips, but don’t forget to institute self-care and wellness. Lack of sleep, a poor diet, and a stressful lifestyle will have a negative impact even if you’re using the correct products.
